Fundraising for Alzheimer’s Research
Tom Bailey
My Story
In April 2026 I’ll be running the Brighton Marathon to raise money for Alzheimer’s research, a cause that has become deeply personal to me. But it is also the biggest cause of death in the UK.
Alzheimer's is the biggest cause of death in the UK. And it's prominence is increasing. Whilst every chronic disease you can think of - cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer- is declining, deaths due to Alzheimer's have increase 87 percent in the last decade. It's estimatedAlong with a long history of the disease in my family, earlier this year, my mum was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and since then I’ve witnessed the heartbreaking progression of the disease, from the first time she repeated a simple sentence to the first time she asked who I was. Watching someone you love slowly slip away is something no family should have to face, and that’s why I’m running, to help fund the research that offers hope for better treatments, earlier diagnoses, and one day, a cure. Every step I take will be forum her, and for all the families living with the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s. This will be a huge challenge for me, the most i run currently is the odd Park Run on a weekend, a far cry from the challenge of 26.2 miles. I know times are hard but anything you can spare is appreciated to help combat this disease. 10 percent of over 65 year olds will develop a form of dementia and that 50 percent of over 85 year olds will. Many of us can reasonably expect to reach this age meaning Alzheimer's affects nearly all of us.
