My Story
***BREAKING NEWS*** My husband, Dr. Julian Greaves is registered to run this event tomorrow and will complete the 10K in my place. Unfortunately, I have caught a virus which has laid me low this past week. On the plus side, I have completed the distance at least once during training and plan to run this again once I'm better. Thank you to everyone who has given their support and sponsored me. I am delighted to report that not only the full target has been reached, the target has been surpassed! I'm so delighted that the Brighton Natural Health Foundation (BNHF), will benefit from this sponsorship and a BIG THANK YOU to my wonderful husband for stepping in for me!
Why I wanted to get involved: I slowly discovered the benefits of Yoga and Mindfulness Meditation in my twenties, during a very stressful time. I was dangerously and chronically stressed. My nervous system had gone into ‘shut down’ after years of holding onto trauma and I’d pushed myself beyond what was healthy. During this time, a therapist introduced me to Mindfulness Meditation, which was gathering a wide interest and earning respect of the scientific community. Over the years, the physical practice of yoga blended with this meditative approach and these practices have proved to be a hugely important resource for me. Today, I teach active styles of yoga (Hatha and Vinyasa) as well as Yin Yoga and Yoga Nidra (Yogic Sleep). I run my own teacher training in Yin Yoga to Healthcare Professionals, anyone who is interested in deepening their yin yoga practice, and to those who are qualified to teach yoga and want to teach yin.
Since Brighton Natural Health Foundation (BNHF) offers free and low-cost classes for people who need them most but, due to cost or accessibility, cannot do so. The charity is passionate about empowering people and communities, to embrace mindful movement for a happier and healthier lifestyle. BNHF provides classes in yoga, Qigong, and Pilates—specifically for people in our community facing:
- Mental health challenges and trauma
- Chronic pain and long-term illness
- Homelessness and economic disadvantage
And the results are life-changing, according to our participants: "These classes have been transformative for my physical and emotional health."
I’ve already secured my place in the race, so every penny raised goes directly to the foundation’s outreach programmes.
- £5 can help subsidize a community class.
- £15-£20 can "sponsor a mat" for someone who otherwise couldn't afford to attend.
- Larger donations help fund specialized 6-week therapeutic courses for survivors of trauma or those living with chronic conditions.
And our lovely friends at the Enjoolata Foundation have agreed to match fund everything up to £1500.
Help us to change lives through mindful movement as it did mine: donate today.
